Supreme Court Deliberates on Congress Leader Pawan Khera's Anticipatory Bail Plea

The Supreme Court of India has concluded the hearing on a petition filed by Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera seeking protection from arrest. Khera had approached the apex court after facing a First Information Report (FIR) registered in Assam, following his alleged derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The court has now reserved its judgment on his plea for anticipatory bail.
During the proceedings, Khera's legal counsel argued that the allegations against him do not warrant his arrest and that his detention would amount to unnecessary humiliation. They emphasized that he is not a hardened criminal and that the multiple FIRs filed across different states were an attempt to harass him. The lawyers urged the court to quash the FIRs or grant him protection from coercive action.
The Assam police had registered an FIR against Khera for his alleged comments made at a press conference. The case was subsequently transferred to the Dwarka court in Delhi, but Khera sought relief from the Supreme Court, citing the potential for multiple arrests and the need for a unified legal process. The apex court had earlier granted him interim protection from arrest, allowing him to approach the appropriate courts for regular bail.
