Sabarimala Ayyappan: Rules, Routes, and Season

The Sabarimala Ayyappan Temple in Kerala is one of the world's most famous pilgrimage sites. Lord Ayyappan, enshrined here, is believed to be the remover of devotees' hardships. Millions of pilgrims visit this holy place annually to seek his blessings.

Pilgrimage Season

The primary pilgrimage season for Sabarimala is the 'Mandalam' festival, which typically begins in the Malayalam month of Vrischikam (mid-November) and lasts for about 41 days until Dhanu (mid-December). The 'Makaravilakku' ritual, coinciding with the sun's transit into Capricorn during Makar Sankranti, is a highly auspicious event. The temple remains open during these periods. It also opens for the Vishu festival in April.

Pilgrimage Rules and Observances

It is crucial to undertake the pilgrimage after observing a 41-day penance ('Vratam'). Key rules include:

  • Celibacy (Brahmacharya): Maintain celibacy throughout the pilgrimage period.
  • Dietary Restrictions: Consume only sattvic food, abstaining from non-vegetarian items, onions, and garlic.
  • Sacred Attire: Wear black or blue traditional attire.
  • Bathing and Prayer: Wake up early daily, bathe, and offer prayers to Ayyappan with devotion.
  • Virtuous Conduct: Practice truthfulness, non-stealing, and anger management.
  • Purity: Maintain physical and mental cleanliness.
  • Chanting 'Saranam Ayyappa': Reciting the mantra 'Saranam Ayyappa' throughout the journey brings merit.

Routes to Sabarimala

While several paths lead to Sabarimala, the traditional and most significant routes are:

  • Via Erumeli: Considered the oldest and most arduous route. Pilgrims perform 'Pettathullal' from Erumeli and trek through forests.
  • Via Vandiperiyar: A relatively easier path, leading to the Pamba River.
  • Via Pulmedu: This is also a scenic route.

Most devotees bathe in the Pamba River, worship the Sarankuthi Anjaneya Swamy, and then ascend the sacred 18 steps to reach the main shrine.

Tips for the Pilgrimage

  • Advance Booking: It is advisable to book darshan slots and accommodation online.
  • Patience: Undertake the journey with patience and mindfulness.
  • Health: Consult a doctor for a health check-up before the pilgrimage.
  • Packing: Carry only essential items.
