Arupadai Veedu: The Six Sacred Abodes of Lord Murugan

Lord Murugan, revered as the foremost among Hindu deities and the remover of devotees' sorrows, is affectionately called 'Arumugan', 'Kandan', and 'Velavan'. The 'Arupadai Veedu' (Six Abodes) are the most important temples for his devotees to visit. Each of these temples holds a unique history and significance, intertwined with the divine plays of Lord Murugan.

1. Thiruparankundram

Located near Madurai, Thiruparankundram is considered the first Padai Veedu. It is believed that Lord Murugan married Goddess Deivanai here. This is a rock-cut cave temple situated on a hill. Lord Murugan is also known as 'Soundararaja Perumal' in this temple. The Karthigai festival celebrated here is very famous.

2. Thiruchendur

Situated on the coast of Thoothukudi district, Thiruchendur is the second Padai Veedu. It is also known as 'Avinankudi'. This is the place where Lord Murugan vanquished the demon Surapadman. A unique feature of this temple is its proximity to the sea. The Margazhi and Kandasashthi festivals are celebrated with great fervor here.

3. Palani

Palani, in Dindigul district, is the third Padai Veedu. Also known as 'Thiru Avinankudi', the deity here is called 'Gnana Dandayuthapani' as he stood for the 'fruit of knowledge' (Gnana Pazham). The Panchamirtham offered as abhishekam to Lord Murugan in this hilltop temple is very famous. Thaipusam and Panguni Uthiram are celebrated grandly here.

4. Swamimalai

Located near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district, Swamimalai is the fourth Padai Veedu. It is believed that Lord Murugan taught the meaning of the Pranava mantra 'Om' to his father, Lord Shiva, himself. This hilltop temple and its spiritual significance attract devotees.

5. Thiruttani

Situated in Tiruvallur district, Thiruttani is the fifth Padai Veedu. It is said that Lord Murugan rested here after the Surasamharam (slaughter of Surapadman). The temple on the hill offers a serene atmosphere. The festivals celebrated here annually are significant.

6. Pazhamudircholai

Located on Alagar Malai near Madurai, Pazhamudircholai is the sixth Padai Veedu. Legends say that Lord Murugan, in disguise as an old man and a vendor, tested a young boy named Kannan who came to the grove. The spring water here is considered sacred. Chithra Pournami is celebrated vibrantly here.
