Thai Poosam: Significance of Kavadi and Paal Kudam

Thai Poosam is one of the most important festivals dedicated to Lord Murugan. It is celebrated every year on the full moon day of the Tamil month 'Thai'. On this auspicious day, devotees observe fasts and offer various vows to Lord Murugan. Among these, carrying Kavadi and Paal Kudam (milk pot) are considered highly significant.

Spiritual Importance of Thai Poosam

The word 'Thai Poosam' itself signifies the day when the 'Poosam' star conjoins with the full moon in the month of 'Thai'. It is believed that on this day, Lord Shiva created Lord Murugan, an embodiment of Goddess Parvati, and Agni Bhagavan (Fire God) sanctified Lord Murugan's Vel (spear). Furthermore, it is believed that on this day, Lord Murugan defeated the demon Soorapadman and blessed the Devas. Therefore, Thai Poosam is considered a day to destroy ego and attain spiritual knowledge.

Significance of Carrying Kavadi

Kavadi is a traditional vow offered to Lord Murugan. 'Kavadi' represents carrying a heavy burden. Devotees carry the Kavadi as a symbol of surrendering their difficulties and sufferings to Lord Murugan. This is considered a form of penance, both physically and mentally. There are various types of Kavadis, with Sakthi Karagam, Mayil Kavadi (peacock Kavadi), Chedi Kavadi (plant Kavadi), and Poo Kavadi (flower Kavadi) being popular ones. Those who carry Kavadi observe fasts, abstain from non-vegetarian food, and maintain physical and mental purity. Carrying the Kavadi with devotion, chanting Murugan's name, and having His darshan is believed to yield great benefits.

Glory of Carrying Paal Kudam

Offering Abhishekam (ritual bathing) to Lord Murugan by carrying Paal Kudam (milk pot) is also one of the important vows on Thai Poosam. Milk symbolizes purity. We carry the milk pot on our heads, symbolizing our mental purity and devotion, to perform Abhishekam for Lord Murugan. It is believed that through this Abhishekam, our sins are cleansed by Lord Murugan's grace, leading to peace of mind and prosperity. The milk abhishekam is considered as bathing the Lord and offering Him coolness.

Thai Poosam Vratam and Worship

Some devotees begin observing the Thai Poosam Vratam (fast) as early as the month of 'Margazhi'. Those observing the fast in 'Thai' month should worship Lord Murugan every morning and evening and recite prayers like Kandha Sashti Kavasam and Murugan Stotras. During the fast, one should abstain from non-vegetarian food, alcohol, and practice self-control. On Thai Poosam day, wake up early, bathe, wear clean clothes, and visit the Murugan temple. Special pujas and Abhishekam ceremonies will be held at the temple. Offer prayers to Murugan, adorn Him with lemon garlands, and offer curd rice as 'prasadam'.
