Murugan, also known as Kartikeya (Tamil: முருகன்) is the Tamil god of war and victory. Murugan is the main god worshipped in Tamil Nadu, South India, Sri Lanka, Mauritius and many other places where Tamilans live. He is a god with six faces. Murugan has six shrines in Tamil Nadu, which are known as Arupadaiveedu. In Tamil Nadu, Murugan has continued to be popular with all classes of society since the Sangam age. Murugan is the son of Shiva and Parvathi, who was created to kill the Asuras and be the eternal protector of the Devas and other living beings. The Asuras were demigods who frequently warred against the Devas or gods out of jealousy because the Asuras were denied sensual pleasure. The six sites in Tamil Nadu where Murugan sojourned while leading his armies against the Asuras are Palani, Swamimalai, Thiruparamkundram, Pazhamudirsolai, Thiruthani and Thiruchendur, the Arupadaiveedu. Kartikeya (Sanskrit: कार्त्तिकेय, IAST: Kārttikeya), also known as Skanda, Kumara, Murugan and Subrahmanya, is the Hindu god of war. He is the son of Parvati and Shiva, brother of Ganesha, and a god whose life story has many versions in Hinduism.  An important deity around South Asia since ancient times, Kartikeya is particularly popular and predominantly worshipped in South India, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Malaysia as Murugan
