Kannappa Nayanar | Nayanar Story in Tamil

Spirituality

Deep within the verdant forests of ancient India, a hunter named Thinnan stumbled upon a hidden treasure – the Vayu Linga of SriKalahasti, a sacred representation of Lord Shiva. Unfamiliar with the intricacies of traditional worship, Thinnan's devotion was pure and heartfelt. He offered the deity the fruits of his hunt, including swine flesh, and poured water from his mouth onto the Shiva Linga, a gesture that reflected his deep reverence. Impressed by Thinnan's unwavering devotion, Lord Shiva accepted his offerings, transcending the boundaries of conventional rituals. Thinnan's unwavering faith and purity of heart transformed him into Kannappa Nayanar, one of the 63 Nayanars, revered saints devoted to Lord Shiva. Kannappa Nayanar's unwavering devotion reached its pinnacle when he willingly plucked out his own eye to offer to Lord Shiva. This act of extreme sacrifice exemplified the intensity of his love and devotion, forever cementing his legacy as one of Lord Shiva's most ardent devotees.
